Highland Cathedral.

"Highland Cathedral" was composed in 1982 by German musicians Ulrich Roever and Michael Korb. Suitable for weddings to be piped down the aisle or indeed for funerals . A Grandiose tune.

  • Composers: Michael Korb (a bagpiper) and Ulrich Roever (a sound engineer and composer) wrote the piece in 1982.

  • Purpose: It was created as a melody for the great Highland bagpipe, frequently associated with a Highland games event held in Germany.

  • Name & Misconceptions: Despite its deeply Scottish sound and widespread status as an unofficial Scottish national anthem, it has no ancient Scottish origin. The title is purely coincidental to a real church—St Columba Gaelic Church in Glasgow, which earned the nickname "Highland Cathedral" due to its grand architecture long before the tune was written.

  • Later Additions: English and Scottish Gaelic lyrics were added later (around 1990 by Peter Kelly), touching on themes of unity among lands and clans.

  • State & Military Events: It served as the official anthem for the Royal Hong Kong Police during British rule and was played during the handover ceremony in 1997. It has also been performed at international state funerals and major military tattoos.
