Jimmy Findlater

"Jimmy Findlater" is a well-known 4/4 marching tune in the Scottish bagpiping tradition, widely played by pipe bands around the world. It’s perfect for piping guests into a wedding or to a formal dinner.

  • Who Jimmy Findlater was: During the 1970s, Jimmy Findlater served as the chairman of the London and South East Branch of the SPBA (Scottish Pipe Band Association, later known as the RSPBA).

  • Composition: The tune was written on May 17, 1973, by Gordon Speirs while he was waiting at an airport in Omaha, Nebraska, before a workshop.

  • The Story Behind the Tune: The recurring melodic phrase ("E, D, double-D, C, B") heard throughout the tune is musical representation of Jimmy Findlater himself: it mimics the sound and rhythm of Jimmy shuffling his feet as he tried—while walking down a hill—to simultaneously keep his marching step, maintain his balance, and carry a load of the band's trophies.

  • Legacy: It is unrelated to George Findlater, V.C., and has since become a staple march in modern pipe band repertoires, performed by groups ranging from the Comrie Pipe Band to regional Scottish and Gaelic pipe bands.
