Farewell to the Creeks
Farewell to the Creeks" is a famous four part 6/8 march written for the Great Highland Bagpipe
Composer: Pipe Major James "Pipie" Robertson of Boyne, Banffshire.
Creation: Composed in 1915 while Robertson was held as a prisoner of war (POW) in Germany during World War I.
Name Meaning: The title is traditionally believed to refer to "The Creeks"—dramatic, rocky coastal inlets around Portknockie on the southern shore of the Moray Firth. Other accounts link the name to the Creek Native-American tribe.
World War II: The tune served as the musical foundation for Hamish Henderson’s famous World War II song, "The Highland Division's Farewell to Sicily" (also known as "Banks of Sicily").
Performances: It is a staple at military tattoos, Robbie Burns Suppers, Highland games, and parades played by massed pipe bands.
